Your Body’s Response to Your Lifestyle

Avoidable, Manageable, Naturally

Studies show that Diabetes is not some genetic nightmare that is passed down by your parents. Rather, Diabetes is the result of your body trying to adapt to chronic inflammation. 1-3 In adult onset Diabetes, the chronic inflammation is primarily the result of imbalances of stress, toxicity, malnutrition, and lack of exercise. Insulin dependent Diabetes is more the result of autoimmune destruction of the cells in your pancreas that make insulin called beta cells.
Diabetes is a result of your body not being able to control blood sugar. So to understand Diabetes, you need to understand how your body controls blood sugars.

Blood Sugar Control

The first control of blood sugar is your appetite. The Glycemic Index of Foods tells you how much different foods affect your blood sugar. Foods with a high index should be avoided, and you should increase your consumption of foods with a low index.

Once you have eaten food, your endocrine system through hormones control your blood sugar. Insulin allows your cells to absorb sugar out of the blood. Glucagon, stress hormones, Thyroid hormones, & growth hormone all increase blood sugar. 11

The goal is to balance food intake and hormones to the energy uptake and use of the cells.

The Steps That Lead to Diabetes

Insulin resistance happens when our blood sugars are consistently too high for the cells to absorb the sugars. When we eat high Glycemic Index foods, our blood sugars rise, and the cells become insensitive to insulin. 2

Chronic stress will raise the blood sugars by releasing the hormones cortisol and epinephrine. 11,21 These hormones cause the muscles to let go of their proteins. The proteins then are converted in the liver to sugars which go into the blood to give you energy to defend your life. This also leads to insulin resistance.

As the cells become more resistant to Insulin, the pancreas has to produce more of it to help get the sugars into the cells where they need to be. In time, the cells just can’t keep up, and the blood sugars rise to critical levels.

Insulin Dependent Diabetes

Insulin dependent diabetes is more of an autoimmune problem. The immune system becomes hypersensitive to certain toxins, and starts to attack and kill the beta cells in the pancreas that make insulin. This type of diabetes is commonly linked to malabsorption problems in the gut and food intolerances. Glutens found in wheat, and proteins found in dairy products have both been associated to autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. 46, 49

Chronic infections such as Epstein Barr have also been shown to cause autoimmune destruction of beta pancreatic cells. 55

Getting Control of Diabetes

  • Starvation is not the answer as this will increase your stress hormones which raise your blood sugars even if you don’t eat. It is much more important to find out why your blood sugars are too high and address that issue.
  • The Glycemic Index of Foods and the Glycemic Load will help to guide the appetite. Food intolerances need to be assessed, as these are one of the basic causes of autoimmune disorders. Gut health needs to be addressed as it is the foundation digestion, absorption, and hormone control.
  • Hormone function must be addressed as this is where blood sugar control is found.
  • Autoimmune and toxicity have to be looked at also for their influence in cell function and insulin production.
  • No one will ever be able to control their blood sugars without a healthy lifestyle of eating a wide variety of whole foods. The Modified Mediterranean Diet is one of the healthiest ways to eat in the world.
  • Exercise normalizes your hormones and helps to control your sugars.
  • Stress management and clearing of toxins needs to be addressed.
